Possession / Demonic

Something else is using the body. Catholic in origin, now largely a genre of ritual.

Possession horror is Catholic architecture applied to the body. It needs an authority (usually a priest), a victim (usually young and female), and a set of rules that both sides accept.

The Exorcist and its damage

The Exorcist (1973) was the highest-grossing horror film ever made at the time, was nominated for ten Academy Awards, and caused fainting and ambulances outside cinemas. Friedkin got the performances partly by firing rifles on set and physically jerking actors on harnesses, which is now discussed more than the film's actual craft.

Its influence was mostly bad. For thirty years the subgenre made the same film with a smaller budget: the rotating head, the guttural voice, the crucifix. Italy produced dozens.

The interesting exceptions

Ken Russell's The Devils (1971) is about a real case, the Loudun possessions of 1634, and argues that the possession was political theatre from the start. It has been cut in every territory it has ever played and the complete version has still not had a proper release.

Zulawski's Possession (1981) is nominally about a marriage breaking down in Berlin. Isabelle Adjani's miscarriage scene in the U-Bahn tunnel took her years to recover from and is the single most extreme piece of acting in this section of the site. It was on the DPP list, which is absurd on any reading.

The modern turn

Since 2005 the framing has moved from religion to trauma and medicine. The Exorcism of Emily Rose is structured as a courtroom drama. The question stopped being "is the demon real" and became "what happens to a girl when a community decides she is possessed", which is more frightening and less filmable.
