Hereditary
A film about grief that turns out to be a film about a cult. Toni Collette should have won everything.
Aster's first feature, and it opens on a doll's house before pulling into a real room, which tells you the thesis: these people are being arranged.
The first hour is a family after a bereavement and it is unbearable before anything supernatural happens. The dinner-table scene where Annie finally says out loud what she thinks about her son is the loudest thing in the film and there is no monster in it.
Then there is the telephone pole. The sequence that follows, the drive home, the boy in the car, the unbroken shot of him lying in bed until morning light, then the cut, is the best-directed passage in modern horror and it is over before the audience has caught up.
Toni Collette is doing the work of her career and was not nominated for an Academy Award, which is the most cited example of the genre bias.
The last act loses some people because it explains itself. Whether the explanation is a betrayal or the point is the argument about it.

Penda's Fen
A BBC play about a repressed vicar's son in the English countryside, and it is one of the strangest things ever broadcast.
I Miss You, Hugs and Kisses
A Canadian courtroom drama about a real murder. Its presence on the list is inexplicable.
Hellbender
Made by one family during lockdown for almost nothing, and it looks better than films with fifty times the budget.
Attachment
A Danish-Jewish folk horror about a dybbuk, a mother, and a relationship the mother will not permit.
Sissy
An Australian wellness influencer at a hen weekend. Much sharper and much nastier than the premise suggests.
