Saint Maud

A palliative care nurse decides she has been called, and Morfydd Clark is terrifying in a way that has nothing to do with the supernatural.

Maud is assigned to a former dancer dying of lymphoma in a large house in a decaying English seaside town. She has recently converted. She believes God speaks to her and that she has been given this woman's soul to save.

Rose Glass keeps it entirely ambiguous whether Maud experiences anything real, and the film's most striking moments, a room tilting, a levitation, a voice, are all inside her.

The seaside setting does an enormous amount: Scarborough out of season, arcade lights, a pier, and a bedsit with a crucifix made of drawing pins.

The last shot is about two seconds long and it recontextualises the entire film. It is one of the great final images and audiences at festivals reportedly gasped.
