Carrie is a 1976 American psychological horror film directed by Brian De Palma.

Carrie White is tormented at school and by her mother, who is a religious fanatic. She has telekinesis. Somebody invites her to the prom.
De Palma shoots the prom as a slow, romantic dream in soft focus and then holds on the bucket for an unbearable length of time, using split screen for the destruction so you watch her face and the room simultaneously.
The opening shower sequence is the film's argument in miniature: Carrie is humiliated for something nobody has explained to her, and the adults are worse than the children.
Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie were both nominated for Academy Awards, which horror essentially never gets.
The final shot was achieved by filming the sequence backwards with the actors moving in reverse and then reversing the film, which is why everything in it moves wrongly. It has been imitated for fifty years and nobody has matched it.
