The Dark and the Wicked
Bryan Bertino's bleakest film. Two siblings return to the family farm as their father dies and something takes the household apart.
A brother and sister come home to a remote Texas goat farm where their father is dying and their mother is unravelling. The mother warns them not to have come. Then she is dead, and the thing that was working on her starts on them.
Bertino, who made The Strangers, offers no comfort and no explanation: the entity is simply present, patient and cruel, and the film's argument is that grief is a door and some things come through it.
It is relentlessly grim, one of the least consoling films on this site, and every character who tries to help makes it worse.
Marin Ireland is excellent as a woman who knows, early, that they are not going to survive this and stays anyway.
There is no third-act reversal. The dread simply accumulates until the end.
