A family's son will not wake up. It is not a coma. The house is not haunted, and moving does not help, which is the twist the film plays at the halfway point and which is a strong structural idea.

The red-faced figure behind Patrick Wilson's shoulder is one of the great cheap shocks, and it is staged in daylight with no music sting until after you have seen it, which is why it works on people twice.

Joseph Bishara wrote the score and plays the demon. The strings are deliberately ugly.

The last third goes into The Further, which is a fog-filled soundstage with lanterns, and loses most of the tension the first hour built. Everybody agrees about this and it made 97 million on a 1.5 million budget anyway.
