The super-8 reels are the film. Everything between them is Ethan Hawke in an office refusing to turn a light on.

A true-crime writer moves his family into the house where the previous family were hanged in the garden, without telling them. In the attic he finds a box of home movies.

Scott Derrickson shot those reels on real 8mm with no sound, and they are the best thing in modern studio horror: grainy, silent, badly framed, and each one ending the same way. The lawnmower reel is the one people cannot forget.

The score by Christopher Young is doing an enormous amount, and one cue is largely a distorted human voice.

Bughuul is much less interesting than the tapes and the film knows it, which is why he stays out of focus in the background for as long as possible.
