What We Do in the Shadows
The funniest vampire film ever made, and the flatmate politics are observed perfectly.
The funniest vampire film ever made, and the flatmate politics are observed exactly.
A documentary crew follow four vampires sharing a house in Wellington. There is a rota for the dishes that has not been honoured in five years. One of them is 8,000 years old and lives in the basement.
Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement improvised most of it from an outline, shot 125 hours of footage and cut it to 86 minutes.
The details are the point: newspaper on the floor before feeding, the difficulty of getting into a nightclub when you must be invited, and the werewolves who are trying very hard not to swear.
The flying fight, done on wires, is one continuous take.
It spawned a television series that is arguably better and this is where the tone was found.
