The sequel picks up minutes after the first, sends a SWAT team into the sealed building, and reframes the whole outbreak.
A tactical unit and a health-ministry doctor enter the quarantined Barcelona apartment block from the first film. The doctor is a priest, and the infection is not a virus.
Balagueró and Plaza made the bold choice to recontextualise the entire first film: what looked like a rage plague is revealed to be demonic possession, a medical mystery turned theological, which either deepens it or breaks it depending on the viewer.
The multi-camera structure, switching between the SWAT team's helmet cameras, is used well, and the penthouse, glimpsed at the end of the first film, is finally explored.
Medeiros, the girl in the attic, remains one of the great found-footage monsters.
It is a rare sequel that is as good as the original and genuinely expands it rather than repeating it.
