The Innkeepers

Claire and Luke run the front desk of the Yankee Pedlar Inn on its final weekend, half-heartedly trying to record evidence of the ghost of a bride said to haunt it.

West spends most of the film on the boredom and small comedy of a dying service job: a slow shift, a difficult guest, a will-they-won't-they that is really just two lonely people passing time.

Sara Paxton is truly likeable, which is why the last act works. When the film finally turns, in the basement, it does so with real restraint and one very good scare.

It was shot in a real hotel that West and his crew had stayed in, which they believed was haunted, and the mundane authenticity of the setting is the whole point.

It is slow by design and the ending divides people. The atmosphere is exact.
