Doctor Sleep

Reconciles King's novel with Kubrick's film, which should not have been possible.

It reconciles King's novel with Kubrick's film, which should not have been possible and is the film's actual achievement.

King famously hated The Shining. His sequel novel ignores it. Mike Flanagan got both King's blessing and Warner's rights and made a film that honours the book's plot and Kubrick's imagery, including recreating the Overlook shot for shot with new actors.

Danny Torrance is a middle-aged alcoholic working in hospice care, using the shining to sit with the dying. That is the best material in it and the film would survive without any of the Overlook.

Rebecca Ferguson plays Rose the Hat as delighted by everything, which is far more frightening than menace.

It flopped. The 180-minute director's cut is the version to watch and is substantially better paced than the theatrical.
