Irish, small, and it contains one of the best-constructed scares of the decade. The wooden man.
Small, Irish, and it contains the single best-constructed scare of the decade.
A blind antiques dealer with second sight investigates her twin sister's murder by installing herself in the widower's converted house, along with a life-sized wooden figure.
Damian McCarthy builds the film around a handful of very simple ideas executed exactly: a door that must not be opened, a glass eye, and the wooden man, which is on screen a great deal and never once moves in a way the film shows you.
The scare in question happens in the middle of the film, in daylight, in a wide shot, and works entirely on staging. People replay it to work out how it was done.
Carolyn Bracken plays both sisters. It cost almost nothing and outclasses studio films that cost fifty times as much.

Adjacent
Delirium
A Vietnam veteran, a vigilante group and a plot that gives up. Not the Lamberto Bava one.
Penda's Fen
A BBC play about a repressed vicar's son in the English countryside, and it is one of the strangest things ever broadcast.
I Miss You, Hugs and Kisses
A Canadian courtroom drama about a real murder. Its presence on the list is inexplicable.
Sissy
An Australian wellness influencer at a hen weekend. Much sharper and much nastier than the premise suggests.
Exposé
The only British film on the DPP list. A novelist, a typist and Fiona Richmond in a farmhouse.
The Slayer
A painter's nightmares kill people on an off-season island. Genuinely atmospheric and badly underrated.
