His House

A South Sudanese couple in British asylum housing. The haunting and the bureaucracy are the same thing.

A South Sudanese couple are granted asylum housing on a run-down English estate, and the haunting and the bureaucracy are the same thing.

Bol and Rial are given a house, a weekly allowance and a list of conditions: do not move, do not work, be one of the good ones. There is something in the walls. There is also something they did to get on the boat.

Remi Weekes makes the point structurally rather than in dialogue. They cannot leave the house because the Home Office will revoke their status, which turns the standard question of why do they not just move into a legal impossibility.

Wunmi Mosaku and Sope Dirisu are outstanding and the film gives Rial the better argument throughout.

The reveal about the crossing recontextualises the entire film and is handled without a single line of exposition.
