The Sixth Sense

The twist made it famous and the film does not need it. It is about a boy nobody believes and a marriage that ended.

A child psychologist takes on a boy who is frightened of something he will not name.

Shyamalan's discipline is what holds up. Red appears in the film only where something has been touched by the other world, and it is used sparingly enough that a coat, a balloon or a door handle carries information without anybody remarking on it.

Haley Joel Osment was ten and gives the best child performance in the genre. The scene in the car with his mother, which is the emotional resolution of the film, has nothing supernatural in it and is where people cry.

The vomiting girl under the tent is the one properly frightening sequence.

It was the second-highest grossing film of 1999 and was nominated for six Academy Awards, which does not happen to ghost stories.
