Ichi the Killer
Miike at his most gleefully unpleasant, and the sickbag handed out at Toronto was a marketing stunt that worked.
A yakuza enforcer who enjoys pain is looking for his missing boss. A weeping, sexually confused killer in a rubber suit is doing the removing.
Adapted from Hideo Yamamoto's manga and shot with a total absence of restraint, this is the film people mean when they say Miike is unwatchable, and it is considerably more calculated than that suggests: Kakihara's masochism and Ichi's arousal are the same joke told from two ends, and the film is about how badly both of them want a specific kind of attention.
Tadanobu Asano is superb, playing a man with a slit mouth held together by piercings.
It was banned outright in several countries and cut heavily in the UK on release.
Not a starting point for Miike and not a starting point for anything.

Adjacent
Delirium
A Vietnam veteran, a vigilante group and a plot that gives up. Not the Lamberto Bava one.
Penda's Fen
A BBC play about a repressed vicar's son in the English countryside, and it is one of the strangest things ever broadcast.
I Miss You, Hugs and Kisses
A Canadian courtroom drama about a real murder. Its presence on the list is inexplicable.
Blood Rites
Andy Milligan shooting in Staten Island with a hand-held Auricon. An acquired taste nobody acquires.
Sissy
An Australian wellness influencer at a hen weekend. Much sharper and much nastier than the premise suggests.
Fight for Your Life
A home invasion built entirely on racial abuse. Genuinely hard to watch and not for craft reasons.
