Session 9
Shot in a real abandoned asylum, and the building does most of the work.
An asbestos removal crew take a job on a decommissioned state hospital with a one-week deadline they cannot meet. One of them finds a box of therapy tapes.
Brad Anderson shot in the Danvers State Hospital in Massachusetts, which was genuinely derelict and has since been mostly demolished. Almost every location is real, filmed on early digital video that gives everything a cold, flat, unflattering light.
The film is about a man under financial pressure with a new baby and a wife he is not speaking to properly, and the horror is that nothing supernatural is required to explain what happens.
The tapes are the structural device and the ninth session is one of the best-sustained sequences of dread on this site.
The last line is delivered flatly, off screen, and is the entire film.

Adjacent
Delirium
A Vietnam veteran, a vigilante group and a plot that gives up. Not the Lamberto Bava one.
Penda's Fen
A BBC play about a repressed vicar's son in the English countryside, and it is one of the strangest things ever broadcast.
I Miss You, Hugs and Kisses
A Canadian courtroom drama about a real murder. Its presence on the list is inexplicable.
Sissy
An Australian wellness influencer at a hen weekend. Much sharper and much nastier than the premise suggests.
Exposé
The only British film on the DPP list. A novelist, a typist and Fiona Richmond in a farmhouse.
The Slayer
A painter's nightmares kill people on an off-season island. Genuinely atmospheric and badly underrated.
