John Cusack alone in a hotel room for most of the running time, and it is the best single-location King film.
A writer who debunks haunted hotels checks into room 1408 of the Dolphin in New York, against the manager's warning, and cannot get out.
Mikael Håfström keeps it almost entirely in one room and lets Cusack carry it, and the film's best idea is that the room does not want to frighten him so much as to break him: it replays his dead daughter, resets time, and offers him escape only to take it away.
Samuel L. Jackson is the manager and delivers the exposition better than exposition deserves.
There are several different endings across cuts, which is the film's one real weakness: nobody could agree how it should close.
It is adapted from a very short King story and it is one of the few haunted-room films that sustains a whole feature.
