Suicide Club

Fifty-four schoolgirls hold hands and step in front of a train in the first three minutes.

Sion Sono opens with the most notorious sequence in modern Japanese horror and then declines to explain it for ninety minutes.

A wave of mass suicides spreads across Japan, connected by a website that counts them, a pop group of preteens, and a roll of stitched human skin found at every site.

The film is deliberately incoherent and its actual subject is a culture in which everybody is a member of something and nobody is anybody, which the interrogation scene about whether you are connected to yourself states outright.

It is very badly made in places, the blood is bright orange, and the glam-rock villain sequence is either the worst or best thing in it.

Sono has never explained the ending and has said the questions people ask about it are the point.
