Verónica
A Madrid teenager holds a séance during a solar eclipse and brings something home. Loosely based on a real police file.
Verónica, caring for three younger siblings while her mother works nights, plays with a Ouija board at school to contact her dead father. Something else answers, and it follows her to the flat.
Paco Plaza, the other half of the REC team, made a straight-down-the-line but very well-crafted possession film, elevated by a genuine sense of the working-class household: the exhausted teenager doing a parent's job, the tower block, the nun with cataracts who understands what is happening.
It draws on the real Vallecas case, a 1990s Spanish police report that officers described as involving events they could not explain, which the film cites.
Sandra Escacena is excellent as a girl carrying too much.
It became a word-of-mouth hit on streaming with a reputation as unwatchably scary, which oversells it, but it is a solid, sincere film.
