Bacurau

In a near-future Brazilian sertao, the small town of Bacurau loses its water supply, its phone signal and its place on the map, and then realises a group of wealthy foreigners have come to hunt its residents for entertainment.

Kleber Mendonça Filho and Juliano Dornelles made a genre-bending film, western, science fiction, horror and political satire at once, about a community turning on the outsiders who have decided its people are expendable.

The tone is deliberately strange: a flying-saucer drone, a psychotropic drug shared by the whole town, an old museum full of the region's bloody history that becomes relevant, and Udo Kier as the leader of the hunters.

It won the Jury Prize at Cannes and is explicitly about Brazil under Bolsonaro and about the global rich treating the poor as prey.

It is one of the most original films on this site and it is furious.
