The Platform
A vertical prison and a descending table of food. The metaphor is a brick and the film is effective anyway.
A vertical prison. Two people per level. A platform of food descends from the top and each level eats what the one above left.
The metaphor is a brick and the film knows it, which is why it stops arguing about it after twenty minutes and starts working out what people actually do inside the system.
Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia shoots it in a single concrete cell repeated hundreds of times, and the level changes each month are the structure: you wake up somewhere new, and your morality is entirely a function of the number on the wall.
Iván Massagué is very good and the film is much funnier than its reputation for the first half.
The last twenty minutes lose the thread and reach for a symbol they cannot land. Everything before that is excellent.

Adjacent
Blood Rites
Andy Milligan shooting in Staten Island with a hand-held Auricon. An acquired taste nobody acquires.
Fight for Your Life
A home invasion built entirely on racial abuse. Genuinely hard to watch and not for craft reasons.
Mardi Gras Massacre
An Aztec-obsessed killer in New Orleans. A Blood Feast remake in all but name, and slower.
Exposé
The only British film on the DPP list. A novelist, a typist and Fiona Richmond in a farmhouse.
You'll Never Find Me
A stranger knocks during a storm at a caravan-park trailer, and neither of the two people is quite what they seem.
Don't Go Near the Park
Cursed cave dwellers from 12,000 BC eating people in modern Los Angeles. Incoherent throughout.
