The Mist
Frank Darabont's third King adaptation, and the ending he changed is one of the cruellest in cinema.
A mist rolls in over a Maine town carrying things from somewhere else. A crowd shelters in a supermarket, and the monsters outside turn out to be less dangerous than the people inside once a woman starts preaching about judgement.
Darabont, who made The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile, shot this handheld and cheap on purpose, and the supermarket is the real subject: how fast a frightened group finds a god and a scapegoat.
Marcia Gay Harden plays the zealot and is frightening.
King wrote an ambiguous ending. Darabont wrote a new one so bleak that King reportedly wished he had thought of it himself, and it is the single most-discussed final scene in modern horror.
There is a black-and-white version Darabont prefers, and it is the one to watch.
