A Quiet Place

A high-concept gimmick executed with real discipline, and the nail on the stair is the whole film in one shot.

Creatures hunt by sound. A family live in silence on a farm, signing, walking barefoot on sand paths, playing board games with felt pieces.

Krasinski uses the premise properly: the film's rules are established visually in a wordless opening sequence, and every subsequent scene is a problem generated by those rules. A pregnancy. A hearing aid. A nail.

The sound design is the achievement. The film drops into total silence when it cuts to the deaf daughter's point of view, which is used sparingly and lands every time.

Millicent Simmonds is deaf and her presence is why the signing and the perspective work rather than being a device.

The creature design is the weakest element. Everything built around it is very strong.
