Overlord
Nazi zombies with a real budget and a unusually good first act. Better than the premise deserves.
Nazi zombies with a real budget and a strong first act, which is more than the premise promises.
American paratroopers drop behind lines the night before D-Day to destroy a radio tower in a French church. There is a laboratory underneath it.
The opening ten minutes, inside a transport plane under anti-aircraft fire, is one of the best-staged action sequences in recent horror: continuous, disorienting, and it ends with a man falling through the sky on fire.
Julius Avery plays the war film absolutely straight for half an hour before the horror arrives, which is why the horror lands.
The effects are practical and the serum sequences are properly grotesque.
It was rumoured for years to be a Cloverfield film and is not related to anything. It flopped and deserved better.

Adjacent
Night of the Demon
Bigfoot tears a man's genitals off. That is the scene, that is the film, that is why it was prosecuted.
Possum
A disgraced puppeteer returns to his childhood home carrying a bag he cannot get rid of.
Huesera: The Bone Woman
Mexican, and the best pregnancy horror since Rosemary's Baby. The joint-cracking sound design is the thing.
The Werewolf and the Yeti
Paul Naschy in the Himalayas. On the list almost certainly because somebody read the title and stopped.
Night of the Bloody Apes
A luchadora, a heart transplant from a gorilla, and real open-heart surgery footage spliced in.
Spring
A love story that happens to involve an immortal woman whose body is not stable. Benson and Moorhead again.
