Brynn, a young seamstress ostracised by her town and living alone in her late mother's house, wakes to find intruders in her home. They are not human.

Brian Duffield made a film with essentially one line of spoken dialogue, telling the whole story through action, sound and Kaitlyn Dever's face, and the constraint is the achievement: it is a home-invasion siege, a grief story and an alien-abduction film, all conveyed without exposition.

Dever carries it alone and is superb, and the film's real subject, revealed gradually, is the guilt and isolation that have made her an outcast long before the aliens arrive.

The ending is genuinely divisive and reframes the whole film as something other than a survival story.

It went straight to streaming and became a word-of-mouth hit precisely for its silence and its swing.
