Tremors

The most perfectly engineered creature film ever made, and it is a comedy.

Two handymen want to leave a Nevada town of fourteen people. Something underground stops them. From there the film is a sequence of problems solved with what is available: a truck, a pole vault, a basement, a bulldozer, a great deal of ammunition belonging to a survivalist couple who turn out to have been right.

The rules are the reason it holds up. The graboids hunt by vibration. That is established early, obeyed without exception, and every set piece is built from it. Nothing in the film happens because the plot needs it to.

Kevin Bacon reportedly thought his career was over when he took it. It has four decades of sequels, none of which understood what made this one work.
