The Chaser
A former detective running an escort agency works out that his missing women all went to the same client.
Na Hong-jin's first film, and the structural trick is that the killer is caught in the first act and the film is about the police being unable to hold him.
Everything after the arrest is procedural failure: no body, no confession that sticks, a mayor covered in excrement occupying the department's attention, and a woman still alive somewhere with a clock running.
It is based on the Yoo Young-chul case and is unusually angry about institutional incompetence.
Kim Yoon-seok plays the pimp as an unpleasant man doing the right thing for the wrong reasons, which the film never softens.
The hammer, the shop and the last twenty minutes are relentless. There is no catharsis at all, which is the point and which is why people find it hard.

Adjacent
Delirium
A Vietnam veteran, a vigilante group and a plot that gives up. Not the Lamberto Bava one.
Penda's Fen
A BBC play about a repressed vicar's son in the English countryside, and it is one of the strangest things ever broadcast.
I Miss You, Hugs and Kisses
A Canadian courtroom drama about a real murder. Its presence on the list is inexplicable.
Sissy
An Australian wellness influencer at a hen weekend. Much sharper and much nastier than the premise suggests.
Exposé
The only British film on the DPP list. A novelist, a typist and Fiona Richmond in a farmhouse.
The Slayer
A painter's nightmares kill people on an off-season island. Genuinely atmospheric and badly underrated.
