Sleep Tight

César is the doorman of a well-kept building. He is incapable of happiness and has decided that his purpose is to ensure nobody else has any either, focusing on Clara, a relentlessly cheerful young tenant whose flat he enters at night.

Jaume Balagueró, who co-made REC, tells the whole film from the perspective of the perpetrator, which is the disturbing choice: you are aligned with César, hoping he does not get caught, and the film makes you complicit in his campaign.

Luis Tosar plays him as an ordinary, put-upon man, which is exactly why it works.

There is very little violence. The horror is the intimacy of the violation and the ordinariness of the man committing it.

It is one of the most deeply upsetting Spanish thrillers, precisely because it is so quiet.
