Kill List

Starts as a kitchen-sink drama about money, ends somewhere else entirely. The turn is brutal.

Starts as a kitchen-sink drama about a couple arguing over money at a dinner party, and the turn, when it comes, is one of the most disorienting in British film.

Jay is an ex-soldier who has not worked in eight months. An old colleague brings him a job. The job is three names on a list, and the people they meet keep thanking him.

Ben Wheatley shoots the domestic scenes with overlapping improvised dialogue and the violence with sudden, flat brutality, and the gap between the two registers is the whole method.

The last fifteen minutes take the film somewhere it has been quietly pointing since the first scene, and a first-time viewer will not see the shape of it until it is done.

Do not read the plot summary. The tunnel sequence and the ending are worth arriving at cold.
