The Lodge

Two children snowed in with their father's new partner, who has a history with a cult.

After their mother's death, two children are taken to a remote lodge to bond with their father's fiancée, who was the sole survivor of a suicide cult as a child. The father is called away. The heating fails, the food goes, and the objects start disappearing.

Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala, who made Goodnight Mommy, work the same seam: cold, symmetrical, cruel, and structured around who is doing what to whom, which is not what it first appears.

Riley Keough is superb as a woman whose grip on reality is being deliberately dismantled, and the film is truly unpleasant about children as agents rather than victims.

The dolls' house recurs as the film's controlling image, the way the real house does.

It divides people on exactly the point Goodnight Mommy did, and it earns it.
