Watcher

An American woman in Bucharest who does not speak the language, is being followed, and is not being believed.

Julia has given up her acting career to move for her husband's job. She is alone all day in a flat opposite a building where a man watches her from a window. There is a killer in the district.

Chloe Okuno makes the film almost entirely about the experience of not being taken seriously: her husband translates conversations selectively, the police are polite and useless, and every man she reports to explains why she is mistaken.

Maika Monroe plays it very quietly, which is a risk, and it pays off in a last act that is over in about ninety seconds.

The film is precise about a specific kind of dread and does not overreach. The final shot is perfect.
