Heretic

Two missionaries, one house, and Hugh Grant enjoying himself enormously as the worst man alive.

Sisters Barnes and Paxton knock on Mr Reed's door to talk about the church. He invites them in. His wife is baking a pie in the next room. There are rules about being alone with a man.

Scott Beck and Bryan Woods write it as a debate for the first hour, and it is a very good one: Reed has clearly done the reading, his argument about iterations is well constructed, and the film lets him be persuasive.

Grant plays him as a man delighted to finally have an audience, which is far more unsettling than menace.

The two doors are the best sequence.

The last act becomes a more conventional basement film and the argument stops, which most people find a let-down. Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East are both excellent throughout.
