Them
A French couple terrorised in a house at night, 77 minutes, and it claims to be true.
Lucas and Clémentine, a French couple living in a large house in Romania, are woken in the night by figures on the property who cut the power and get inside.
Bustillo and Maury's countrymen were making the extreme films; David Moreau and Xavier Palud made the opposite, a lean, quiet, almost bloodless siege that relies entirely on the dark and on not showing you who is out there.
It runs 77 minutes and wastes none of them, and the reveal of who the attackers are is the bleakest thing in it.
It predates the American The Strangers, which has an almost identical premise, by two years, and the comparison has followed both films around ever since.
The claim that it is based on true events is the standard marketing lie of the genre.

Adjacent
Blood Rites
Andy Milligan shooting in Staten Island with a hand-held Auricon. An acquired taste nobody acquires.
Fight for Your Life
A home invasion built entirely on racial abuse. Genuinely hard to watch and not for craft reasons.
Mardi Gras Massacre
An Aztec-obsessed killer in New Orleans. A Blood Feast remake in all but name, and slower.
Exposé
The only British film on the DPP list. A novelist, a typist and Fiona Richmond in a farmhouse.
You'll Never Find Me
A stranger knocks during a storm at a caravan-park trailer, and neither of the two people is quite what they seem.
Don't Go Near the Park
Cursed cave dwellers from 12,000 BC eating people in modern Los Angeles. Incoherent throughout.
