New French Extremity meets Texas Chain Saw, against the backdrop of a real French election.
A group of young people flee riots in Paris after a far-right electoral win and hole up at a rural inn run by a family of neo-Nazi cannibals.
Xavier Gens opens with the 2002 election that put Le Pen into the second round, and the politics are the point: the film is about a France turning to its worst self, and the family in the countryside are the explicit endpoint of it.
It is extremely violent and owes an obvious debt to Hooper, with a final-girl survival structure and an abattoir aesthetic.
It was released the same year as Inside and Martyrs and is the least of the three, but the political framing gives it something the others do not have.
It was originally rated NC-17 in the US and released unrated.
