The Devil's Rejects

Rob Zombie's second film, and it turns the killers from his first into the protagonists, which should not work.

The Firefly family, introduced in House of 1000 Corpses, are on the run from a sheriff who has stopped caring about the law, and the film follows them across a sun-blasted 1978 Texas as they take a motel full of musicians hostage.

Zombie drops the haunted-house style of the first film for a grimy road movie shot like a lost drive-in picture, all zooms, dust and Lynyrd Skynyrd, and the effect is that you spend the film with genuinely monstrous people and are made to feel something at the end regardless.

The final sequence, to Free Bird, is the reason it has the reputation it does.

Sid Haig, Bill Moseley and Sheri Moon Zombie are all committed, and William Forsythe plays the avenging sheriff as worse than the people he is chasing.

It is nasty and it is far more accomplished than the film it follows.
