Bone Tomahawk

A slow, talky, extremely well-written western for ninety minutes, and then one scene that people never stop bringing up.

Four men ride out to recover people taken by a group of cave-dwelling troglodytes. Kurt Russell, Richard Jenkins, Matthew Fox and Patrick Wilson, and the film is mostly the four of them talking around a fire.

S. Craig Zahler wrote it as a novelist would and the dialogue is the reason to watch: Jenkins in particular is given a monologue about a flea circus that has nothing to do with anything and is the best thing in the film.

Then they reach the cave. That sequence is brief, entirely practical, and about as extreme as anything on this site.

The tonal whiplash is the design, not an accident.
