Evil Dead II
Half remake, half sequel, and it turns the first film into slapstick without losing the nastiness.
Ash returns to the cabin and the first ten minutes recap the original with a different cast because Raimi could not licence the footage.
What follows is one of the great physical comedies. Ash fights his own possessed hand, is beaten with plates, laughs along with the furniture, and eventually replaces the hand with a chainsaw.
Raimi shot it with the same techniques as the first, the shaky-cam on a plank, the aggressive Dutch angles, plus a great deal of stop motion, and the slapstick timing is Three Stooges rather than horror.
Bruce Campbell's performance is a physical achievement and made him a permanent cult figure.
It flopped and found its audience on video.
The ending sets up Army of Darkness, which is a medieval comedy and barely horror.

Adjacent
Blood Rites
Andy Milligan shooting in Staten Island with a hand-held Auricon. An acquired taste nobody acquires.
Attachment
A Danish-Jewish folk horror about a dybbuk, a mother, and a relationship the mother will not permit.
Fight for Your Life
A home invasion built entirely on racial abuse. Genuinely hard to watch and not for craft reasons.
Mardi Gras Massacre
An Aztec-obsessed killer in New Orleans. A Blood Feast remake in all but name, and slower.
Exposé
The only British film on the DPP list. A novelist, a typist and Fiona Richmond in a farmhouse.
Don't Go Near the Park
Cursed cave dwellers from 12,000 BC eating people in modern Los Angeles. Incoherent throughout.
