When Evil Lurks

Argentinian, merciless, and it establishes early that the film will not spare anybody, then means it.

Two brothers in rural Argentina find a man in an advanced state of demonic possession, called a rotten, and try to remove him from the area. There are rules for dealing with this. Nobody follows them.

Demián Rugna's innovation is that possession here is an infection with a protocol, and the horror is watching people break the protocol out of panic, ignorance or love.

It is one of the most upsetting films of the decade, and specifically because of what it is willing to do to characters that any other film would protect. There are at least two moments where the audience assumes the film will cut and it does not.

The dog. The goat. The scene in the school.

Do not watch it casually.
