Mickey Rourke hunts a missing crooner for a client called Louis Cyphre, and the answer is the worst possible one.
A cheap 1955 New York detective is hired by an elegant stranger to find a singer who welched on a debt. The trail runs to New Orleans, voodoo, and a truth about the detective himself.
Alan Parker shot it as a noir that curdles into horror, all falling lifts, ceiling fans and dripping water, and the atmosphere of decay builds long before the plot resolves.
Robert De Niro plays Louis Cyphre with long fingernails and total calm, and the moment the pun in the name lands is the moment the film has you.
It was cut to avoid an X rating for a sequence involving Lisa Bonet, then on The Cosby Show, which caused a scandal at the time.
The ending is one of the bleakest in the genre, and the descent, literally, of the final shot is perfect.
