Alucarda
Mexican nunsploitation with an actual argument, and everybody in it screams for eighty minutes.
An orphan arrives at a convent and befriends Alucarda, who is unhinged and possibly demonic. They open something in a crypt.
Juan López Moctezuma had produced for Jodorowsky and the film shares that sensibility: the nuns are wrapped head to foot in bloodstained bandages rather than habits, the convent looks like a cave, and everything is staged as delirium.
Its argument is anticlerical and unsubtle. The church's response to two girls in love is to strip and torture them, and the film sides against the church entirely.
Tina Romero plays Alucarda at a permanent shriek and the performance is either the reason to watch or the reason to stop.
It is enormously stylish, deeply silly, and the last twenty minutes are on fire in every sense.
