The Toolbox Murders
The first fifteen minutes are notorious. The remaining seventy are a different and much duller film.
Fifteen minutes of notoriety attached to seventy minutes of a different and much duller film.
The opening sequence is a series of killings in an apartment block, filmed at length, one of them scored to a gentle country ballad playing on the radio while it happens. That juxtaposition is why the film has a reputation and it is very effective.
Then the film becomes a slow kidnap drama with a religious motive, and the energy never returns.
Cameron Mitchell is doing real work in it, which is more than the material deserves.

Adjacent
Delirium
A Vietnam veteran, a vigilante group and a plot that gives up. Not the Lamberto Bava one.
Blood Rites
Andy Milligan shooting in Staten Island with a hand-held Auricon. An acquired taste nobody acquires.
Don't Go in the Woods
Shot in Utah for 100,000 dollars with a score that never stops. Beloved by a small and stubborn group.
Sissy
An Australian wellness influencer at a hen weekend. Much sharper and much nastier than the premise suggests.
Fight for Your Life
A home invasion built entirely on racial abuse. Genuinely hard to watch and not for craft reasons.
Mardi Gras Massacre
An Aztec-obsessed killer in New Orleans. A Blood Feast remake in all but name, and slower.
