The Empty Man

Dumped by the studio into a pandemic with no marketing, runs 137 minutes, and opens with a 22-minute prologue in Bhutan that has almost nothing to do with the plot.

That prologue is why people talk about it. Four hikers find something in a cave, and the sequence is shot and paced like a different and better film than the one that follows.

The rest is a former police officer investigating a missing girl and a group who are transmitting an entity by thinking about it. There is a truly unnerving sequence on a bridge.

David Prior had spent his career making making-of documentaries for David Fincher, which shows in the technique.

It is far too long, it does not entirely work, and it has more real ideas in it than most of the studio horror released that decade.
