It Lives Inside
An Indian-American teenager unleashes a demon from Hindu folklore while trying to assimilate.
Sam, embarrassed by her immigrant mother and desperate to fit in, pushes away her former best friend, who has been carrying a malevolent entity, a pishach, trapped in a jar. When the jar breaks, the demon is freed and begins feeding.
Bishal Dutta made a solid, sincere possession film whose real subject is second-generation assimilation: Sam's shame about her culture is inseparable from the thing now hunting her, and reclaiming the folklore is how she has to fight it.
It draws on the pishach of Hindu tradition and treats it seriously rather than as exotic decoration.
Megan Suri carries it, and the entity is kept mostly off screen, which is the right choice for the budget.
It is a familiar structure done with genuine cultural specificity, and it sits alongside It Follows and The Babadook in the recent wave of debut horror about a teenager and a metaphor.

Adjacent
Penda's Fen
A BBC play about a repressed vicar's son in the English countryside, and it is one of the strangest things ever broadcast.
Hellbender
Made by one family during lockdown for almost nothing, and it looks better than films with fifty times the budget.
Attachment
A Danish-Jewish folk horror about a dybbuk, a mother, and a relationship the mother will not permit.
Huesera: The Bone Woman
Mexican, and the best pregnancy horror since Rosemary's Baby. The joint-cracking sound design is the thing.
Tigers Are Not Afraid
Children orphaned by the Mexican drug war, three wishes, and the dead following them through the streets.
Evilspeak
Clint Howard, a military academy, a computer and a lot of pigs. Better than it has any right to be.
