A former Danish actress falls for a Jewish academic from London and follows her home, into a flat above the mother's kosher shop in the Orthodox community, where something is very wrong with the daughter's leg and with the salt across the doorways.

Gabriel Bier Gislason draws on Ashkenazi folklore, the dybbuk and the ritual protections against it, and treats the religious practice with real specificity rather than as decoration.

It is as much about a controlling mother and a new partner competing for a woman as it is about the supernatural, and the two readings hold together completely.

Josephine Park and Ellie Kendrick are both very good, and Sofie Gråbøl, from The Killing, plays the mother.

It is a rare horror film that is warm before it is frightening.
