Huesera: The Bone Woman

The best pregnancy horror since Rosemary's Baby, and the sound design is what does the damage.

Valeria wants a baby, gets pregnant, and immediately begins to come apart. She was a carpenter before, and a punk, and she left a woman she loved to have the life she is now assembling.

Michelle Garza Cervera makes the horror about the erasure of a self rather than about the foetus: the family close in with advice, the boyfriend is kind and useless, and Valeria's hands start cracking their own joints compulsively.

That cracking is the film's signature and it is used sparingly enough to keep working.

The folkloric figure of the title arrives late and is the least interesting element. Everything about the domestic life closing around her is exceptional.
