A lone woman on a Cornish island in 1973, a flower, a standing stone, and time coming apart.
A wildlife volunteer lives alone on an uninhabited Cornish island, recording the temperature of a rare flowering plant each day and dropping a stone down a mineshaft. The days start to repeat and bleed into each other, and the dead begin to appear.
Mark Jenkin shot it himself on hand-processed 16mm, with post-synced sound, so the whole film has the texture and slight wrongness of a lost 1970s public-information film.
It is barely a narrative. It is a study of isolation and of the island's layered history, miners, a wrecked crew, a standing stone, all of them present at once, and the film trusts you to sit in it.
It is not for people who want plot. For everybody else it is one of the most distinctive British films of recent years.
The title is Cornish for stone island.

A BBC play about a repressed vicar's son in the English countryside, and it is one of the strangest things ever broadcast.
