Hatching

Tinja is a competitive gymnast whose mother runs a relentlessly cheerful family lifestyle blog. Tinja finds an egg, hides it, and nurtures it, and it hatches into something that acts out everything she is not permitted to feel.

Hanna Bergholm makes the creature a practical, bird-like puppet that grows toward looking like Tinja, and the film is a clean, nasty allegory: the monster does the rage the perfect daughter has to suppress, and the mother's brand is the actual horror.

It is a body-horror coming-of-age film in the Ginger Snaps and Raw tradition, executed with real craft and a deeply upsetting central effect.

Siiri Solalinna plays both Tinja and, in a sense, the creature.

The pastel, spotless family home is filmed as a trap, which is the point.
