Suspiria

Argento more or less abandons narrative and replaces it with colour.

An American ballet student arrives at a German dance academy in a rainstorm shot like the end of the world, and from there the film runs on nightmare logic. The plot resolves in about ninety seconds of exposition near the end and does not matter.

It was one of the last films printed using the three-strip Technicolor dye-transfer process, which is why the reds look like nothing shot since. Argento lit interiors through coloured glass rather than gels and pushed the stock to make the palette more extreme still.

Goblin recorded the score before shooting and it was played on set at volume during takes. It is the loudest score in horror and the mix makes no attempt to be comfortable.

The first fifteen minutes are the best opening in the genre. If they do not work on you, the rest will not either.
