Deep Red

A pianist witnesses a murder through a window, becomes convinced he saw something in the room he cannot place, and spends two hours failing to remember it. The film does exactly the same thing to you: the clue is on screen in plain sight in the first ten minutes.

Argento is at his most controlled here. The camera prowls objects rather than people, gliding over children's drawings, marbles and mechanical dolls, and Goblin's prog score is aggressive enough to function as a second antagonist. David Hemmings is doing a deliberate callback to Blow-Up, and it lands.

The English dub is significantly worse than the Italian and cuts 21 minutes. Find the 127-minute Italian version.
