Lisa and the Devil
Bava given complete freedom, and the film is a dream nobody can escape, including the producer.
A tourist in Toledo gets lost, is drawn to a villa, and finds a household of the dead presided over by a butler played by Telly Savalas, who is also the Devil, and who is eating lollipops and carrying a mannequin that looks like her.
Bava made it as a personal film with no commercial guardrails and produced the purest expression of his sensibility: a plot that loops, a heroine who may be dead, and a lush, decaying beauty that has no interest in explaining itself.
It flopped completely and was unreleasable, so the producer had new footage shot with a priest and an exorcism and released it as The House of Exorcism to cash in on The Exorcist, which is a butchery.
Find Lisa and the Devil, the original cut. Elke Sommer is the tourist and Savalas is having the time of his life.
